Expert Advice | Lauren Gilberthorpe

We asked Cotswolds interior designer, Lauren Gilberthorpe about creating outside spaces, every inch as comfortable as the indoors.

1. When beginning a new project or seasonal refresh, deciding on a style can feel overwhelming. What is your signature style and how do you suggest people find theirs?

My signature style leans towards creating a blend of contemporary and traditional elements, focusing on comfort and personalisation. For anyone trying to find their style, I suggest starting with what you're drawn to in daily life. Whether it's art, nature, or even fashion, your everyday preferences can guide your interior design choices. Experiment with mood boards and don't be afraid to mix elements until you find the combination that feels right for you.

2. What should we consider when choosing furniture for a space?

It's about finding the right balance between the size of the furniture and the room, ensuring there's enough space to move comfortably. I also consider the lighting and colour palette of the room to make sure the furniture complements these elements.

3. What do you recommend are the 3 most important things to hold in mind when laying out a space?

The top three things I keep in mind are functionality, flow, and focal points. I always design with the end use of the space in mind, whether it's for relaxing, entertaining, or working. I also consider traffic patterns in the room to ensure a natural flow. Lastly, I like to design around focal points, be it a piece of art, a beautiful view, or a unique furniture piece.

4. Our gardens can sometimes feel a very separate part of our homes. What simple ways will help us connect outdoor spaces to the indoors?

To create a connection between outdoor and indoor areas, I like to use similar colour schemes or materials in both spaces. Large windows or glass doors can create a seamless transition. I also recommend bringing outdoor elements like plants or stone inside to echo the natural feel.

5. When the cooler months arrive, it feels easier to hide away inside. Are there elements we can include in our set up that will tempt us outdoors a little later in the year?

I believe in making outdoor spaces inviting all year round. Adding elements like outdoor heaters, fire pits, and cosy seating with plush cushions can make a huge difference. Soft lighting and weather-resistant throws also add warmth and ambiance.

6. How can we incorporate seasonal touches to make our outdoor spaces feel cosier for autumn?

For a cosier autumnal outdoor space, I love adding richly toned accessories, like rust-coloured cushions or forest green rugs. Outdoor lighting, like festoon lights or candles, also helps create a warm, inviting atmosphere that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

7. Autumn is the ideal time for experimenting with richer colours and more textured styles. What tones and fabrics work nicely together?

When picking autumnal tones, I gravitate towards warm, earthy colours like ochre, burgundy, and forest green. I love to mix textures; combining soft velvet with rugged tweed or adding a knitted throw can create a cosy, layered look perfect for the season.

8. When we’ve chosen our furniture, how do we go about adding those finishing touches?

I believe that the finishing touches should reflect your personality. Whether it's through artwork, decorative cushions, or unique trinkets, these elements should complement the furniture and bring your personal story into the space.

9. It’s nice to be decorative but how do we know when enough is enough to avoid making things cluttered?

My rule of thumb is that every item should either have a purpose or bring you joy. It’s easy to overdo it, so I recommend taking a step back and assessing each item. Sometimes, removing one or two things can make a space feel more open and balanced.

10. Finally, what would be your number one design rule that you never break?

My golden rule in design is to always prioritise functionality and comfort. No matter how beautiful a space is, if it doesn’t meet the needs of those using it, it's not well-designed. Understanding and incorporating the lifestyle and preferences of the occupants is key!
